Online Bible Sites

Recommended Sites

Bible Odyssey is supported by the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL). While its presentation of the Bible online is somewhat limiting, the overall site provides numerous quality resources for the academic study of the Bible.

Oremus Bible Browser is a very streamlined site without a lot of distractions and advertisements, making it an excellent choice for reading the Bible online.

Additional sites

Bible Gateway is a well developed site with multiple translations available. Among its features, the site provides an opportunity to view multiple translations in parallel, but the additional resources on the website should be used with caution when doing exegesis.

YouVersion offers a very clean and distraction free reader for the Bible. The reader also supports hundreds of translations in different languages, although not all of the translations are suitable for academic use.

STEP (Scripture Tools for Every Person) is a resource provided by Tyndale House. In addition to providing multiple popular translations in multiple languages, the site can synchronize and display multiple translations at once. The site also provides a download option allowing for the resources to be used while offline.

In addition to multiple popular translations of the Bible, Biblica, the International Bible Society, offers a 365-day reading plan that can be changed to start on the day of your choosing. Two versions/translations can be displayed at the same time for comparison purposes as well.

Searching the Online Catalog

To search the library's online catalog for other versions of the Bible, use the following format in the search box (including the quotation marks):

"Bible [language] [version]"

For example, to search for Bibles in the library's catalog with the New International Version (NIV, an English translation), you would type the following into the search box:

"Bible English New International"

Similarly, to find a translation of the Bible in German (any version), you would type:

"Bible German"
